28. Interview with Print One

Print One, Mount Forest
1)    What is your official job title?
Graphic designer
2)    How long has this print company been in business?
30 years, 23 with the present owner
3) What kind of orders do you usually take? (e.g. business cards and letterhead, signage, flyers, posters, cards and invitations, tickets, other)
We take everything, but the most popular things are business cards, flyers, posters, and sometimes postcards.
4) How many printers do you have? Whats the biggest size you could potentially print?
We have 6 printers and 2 photo printing machines. The biggest size we could print is 36x48.
5) How do clients send you their files to print (email, USB, CD, other) and specify what they want (fill out a form or just word of mouth)?
Most customers come in and we jot down their idea and quickly come up with some proofs for them, otherwise we take most jobs from designers and companies through email or dropbox.
6) Do you have a preferred colourspace in which to submit files?
Definitely CMYK.
7) Does your company offer other services such as binding, foil stamping, embossing, etc?
We offer binding, but for the others we would job out.
8) What advice would you give graphic design students who are learning about printing and how to work with printers?
Know how to finish a job for print. Most designers I have met straight out of school dont understand colour separations or how to finish a job.
9)What kind of education do you have/need for a position like this?
Graphic design, I went to Mohawk for 2 years.
10) Whats the most difficult piece of equipment to run?
The large format colour printer because it costs so much per print so there's little room for mistakes.
11) Whats your favourite print job application?

I really enjoy designing flyers and some business cards.
